Bleeding Heart Libertarians!

A number of academic philosophers have recently started a great new blog, called Bleeding Heart Libertarians! Will Wilkinson is a fan.

From the start, it’s clear these are not libertarians in the mold of Hayek, Mises, or Rand, or Rothbard.  In particular they are trying to mix libertarian ideas with traditional liberal ideas:

“I’ve created this blog as a forum for academic philosophers who are attracted both to libertarianism and to ideals of social or distributive justice.”

Like good philosophers, these bloggers aren’t wasting time with the details of day to day policy, but going directly for the important issues, especially the legitimacy and role of social justice.  This is an important issue for health policy. Currently, distributive justice is the only political principle in bioethics.  The lack of an alternative principle leaves libertarians with little recourse when arguing for freedom in health care.  So, is this a valid principle?  If so, is it the most important political principle?

I look forward to some great discussions!
